Do you need a 4x4 for Etosha National Park?
No, you do not strictly need a 4x4 to visit Etosha. The park's roads are graded gravel and can be driven in a normal 2WD car in the dry season, and off-road driving is not permitted anywhere in the park. That said, most self-drive travellers still choose a 4x4 or a high-clearance vehicle, because the gravel is corrugated and hard on tyres, the extra clearance and height help on both the roads and the game viewing, and a 4x4 becomes genuinely important in the rainy season and on the rest of a Namibia self-drive trip. If Etosha is one stop on a wider Namibian route, a 4x4 is the safer, more comfortable choice.

CAN YOU DRIVE A NORMAL CAR IN ETOSHA?
Yes. Every road inside Etosha is graded gravel, and the main routes between the rest camps and waterholes are maintained for ordinary traffic. Plenty of visitors self-drive the park in a 2WD sedan without trouble, particularly in the dry months. You are not allowed to leave the marked roads at any point, so heavy off-road ability is not the deciding factor. What matters more is ground clearance and how well the vehicle copes with corrugations and dust over a full day of driving.
WHY MOST TRAVELLERS CHOOSE A 4X4
A 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle earns its place for a few practical reasons. The gravel is uneven and corrugated, which is tiring in a low car and rough on tyres. Sitting higher gives you a better viewing angle for spotting game near the road. There is more room for a group, cameras and gear. And if your plans reach beyond Etosha into more remote parts of Namibia, a 4x4 opens up routes a sedan cannot safely manage.
DRY SEASON VS RAINY SEASON
In the dry season, roughly May to October, the gravel is firm and a carefully driven 2WD copes well. In the rainy season, roughly November to April, the picture changes. Gravel softens, low-lying sections can flood, and traction matters far more. If you are travelling in the wet months, a 4x4 is the sensible choice for both safety and access.
