Got Questions?
Here are some of our most frequently asked questions related to 4x4 rental in Windhoek
-
IS A 4X4 REALLY NECESSARY IN NAMIBIA?Yes, it is highly recommended to drive a 4x4 vehicle whilst in Namibia. 90% of the roads you drive on are gravel roads. Although you won't use the 4x4 feature on all roads, the 4x4 vehicle will definitely make the journey more comfortable due to the high ground clearance and all-terrain tires that are fitted to the vehicle. Smaller cars tend to have underbody damage every time they drive on a gravel road and this is not covered by any car rental company in Namibia.
-
ARE KILOMETERS UNLIMITED?Yes! All our rentals have unlimited kilometers.
-
WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AGE TO RENT YOUR VEHICLES?The Namibian law states that you have to be at least 18 years of age to drive, therefore, in order to rent a vehicle from us, you must be at least 18 years old and you must have had your driver's license for more than one year.
-
WILL ANY MONEY BE BLOCKED ON MY CREDIT CARD?No, we will not block any money. Upon your arrival at our office, we will deduct the rental amount if it has not been paid upfront. For the Excess Option chosen and all exclusions on the Terms & Conditions, we will only take an imprint of your card for surety. When the car is returned to us without any damage on it, we will give you back your copy of the taken imprint.
-
IS THE COMPLIMENTARY AIRPORT TRANSFER STILL VALID IF WE ARRIVE A DAY BEFORE THE RENTAL PICK UP DATE OR IF WE LEAVE A DAY AFTER WE RETURN THE VEHICLE?Yes, we will then transfer you from the airport to your guesthouse (or our guesthouse linked here) and then transfer you to our office on the next day. This is all included in the rental price. Please note that only ONE transfer from the airport to Windhoek and only ONE transfer from Windhoek to the airport is permitted per rental. Also visit our MORE page to see how you'll benefit from renting with us :)
-
HOW DO I KNOW SOMEONE WILL PICK ME UP AT THE AIRPORT?Seeing that you send us your arrival details once confirming the booking, we will then immediately schedule your complimentary airport transfer and you do not have to confirm beforehand or email us asking whether or not someone will pick you up at the airport.
-
WHAT DOES YOUR "BEDDING" INCLUDE?"Our bedding includes one sleeping bag and one pillow.
-
WHAT IS INCLUDED WITH THE CAMPING EQUIPMENT?Please take a look at our CAMPING LIST HERE!

The procedure includes a detailed explanation of the contract, the vehicle and all it's functions (e.g. 4x4) as well as the camping equipment.
-
HOW LONG DOES IT USUALLY TAKE TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO YOUR OFFICE?It's approximately a 45 minute drive from WDH airport.
-
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR MY DRIVER'S LICENSE AND DO I NEED AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER'S LICENSE?If you're driver's license is in english and has a photo of you on it, you will not require an international's driver's license. If your driver's license does not meet the beforementioned requirements, you will need an international driver's license.
-
DO I REALLY NEED TO RENT A SATELLITE PHONE?We would only recommend renting/buying a satellite phone if you are planning on travelling to southern africa's most remote areas. Namibia has approximately 90% cell coverage and has cell coverage on most common touristic and travel routes and therefore a satellite phone will not be neccesary in most areas. We would recommend buying a mobile sim card at MTC.

Your Guide to Travelling Namibia by 4x4
Inside here is a lot of helpful info written by our team of locals.
Introduction to Windhoek
The first time I landed in Windhoek, I was captivated. As the wheels of the plane touched down, the vast expanse of the desert landscape stretching out before me felt like another world. With a palpable blend of German architecture and African rhythms, this city becomes a starting point for most travelers diving into Namibia's wild beauty.
When you step off the plane at Hosea Kutako International Airport, a gentle, dry breeze might be the first thing to greet you. It's nature's way of saying, "Welcome to Namibia!".
Now, a couple of things for new visitors:
Currency & ATMs: The Namibian Dollar (NAD) is the official currency, but you'll find that the South African Rand is widely accepted due to their 1:1 exchange rate. I'd recommend grabbing some cash at the airport just to be safe.
Language: English is the official language, but don't be surprised if you hear Afrikaans or native tongues like Oshiwambo and Damara. A polite "hello" in any language goes a long way.
Safety: Windhoek is relatively safe for tourists. As always, basic precautions like not flashing valuables and avoiding poorly lit areas at night are wise.
4x4 rentals Windhoek: If you're thinking about seeing the beauty of Namibia, this is where the real journey begins. But more on that soon!
So, buckle up! You're in for a mesmerizing journey through Namibia's landscapes, and I'm already jealous just thinking about what you're in store for.
Why a 4x4 Is Important
The first time I set out on a Namibian road trip, the decision to opt for a regular car seemed okay. That is until we reached the outskirts of Windhoek. The gravel roads, unexpected dips, and rocky trails quickly taught me a lesson: in Namibia, a 4x4 isn't just a luxury; it's a necessity.
Here are a few more reasons you might consider renting a 4x4 in Windhoek:
Accessibility to Remote Areas
There's a remote beautiful spot I had planned to visit, called the Fish River Canyon. Attempting to reach somewhere like that without a 4x4 is like trying to swim without getting wet.
The rugged terrains of Namibia are filled with such hidden gems. With a 4x4, you're not just traveling; you're exploring. It gives you the freedom to drive off the beaten track, discover hidden oases, and camp under the stars in places most travelers might never see.
Rough Roads and the Comfort Factor
I remember a particularly bumpy stretch near Damaraland. I made the mistake of trying to take it on in a sedan on my first visit to Namibia. How it (let alone me) made it out on the other side, I'm not sure.
They don't just make the ride comfortable; they ensure that the vehicle remains undamaged and reliable throughout your journey.
The truth is, while the main roads around Windhoek and other cities are well-maintained, the real beauty of Namibia lies beyond. And for that you want a vehicle that doesn’t blink at the sight of a gravel road or a sandy dune.
Types of 4x4 Rentals Available in Windhoek
Here's a breakdown of what Windhoek has in store when it comes to 4x4 rentals.
Different Models and Their Features
Toyota Hilux: These are the classics of Namibian road trips. Durable, spacious, and equipped to handle everything from desert sand to muddy trails. They come equipped with camping equipment, or just as a standalone vehicle. Any decent 4x4 rental place in Windhoek will have them modified to handle the requirements of camping & using them as your "home base" for a few days.
SUVs like the Nissan Patrol: They merge the comfort of city cars with the ruggedness needed for the Namibian landscape. They’re great for families or smaller groups.
Sizes
There are two sizes available: Single cab or Double cab.
For those not well versed in the "bakkie" (as the locals call it) lingo, a single cab just means there is a single cabin, able to accommodate a maximum of two people (driver and passenger).
The double cabin can accomodate up to 4 people, including the driver.
Since the vehicles are actually the same size, a single cab will obviously come with more storage space available at the back.
Recommendations Based on the Nature of Your Trip
Family Outings: Go for SUVs or larger double-cab 4x4's. These provide ample space for both passengers and luggage. Plus, they come with modern safety features.
Solo or Couples Adventure: Single-cab 4x4s are your best bet. They'll have plenty of storage, and be comforable for just the two of you.
Wild Camping Expeditions: Pick vehicles like the Hilux with roof-top tents or added camping kits. You’ll be grateful for these setups when you're in the wild.
Costs and Budgeting for 4x4 Rentals
Average 4x4 Rental Prices: Rental costs can vary greatly based on the season, the type of vehicle, and the duration of the rental. On average, expect to shell out anywhere from NAD $1000 (roughly $67 USD) to NAD $3000 (roughly $200 USD) per day. The pricier ones usually come with additional perks like camping equipment or GPS devices.
Hidden Costs: When looking for 4x4 rentals in Windhoek, watch out for:
Mileage limits: Some rentals might have a daily limit, after which you could be charged per kilometer.
Cross-border fees: Planning to visit neighboring countries? Ensure your rental agreement allows it and find out the fees.
Equipment Rentals: Things like GPS, satellite phones, or camping gear could come with added costs.
In the end, while choosing a 4x4, think of it as picking a travel buddy. You want someone reliable, suits your style, and, importantly, respects your budget. With the right 4x4 from Windhoek, the terrains of Namibia are yours to conquer!
Understanding Rental Agreements and Insurance Options
Ah, the rental agreement. It might sound tedious, but trust me, it's an absolute necessity to ensuring your 4x4 adventure in Namibia doesn't end in unexpected costs or disputes.
Here's a lowdown on what to expect, what to look for, and what to (politely) argue about.
Common Terms in the Agreements
Deposit: It's standard to leave a deposit before you start your journey. This acts as a safety net for rental companies in case of damages or other contingencies. Some companies (like Advanced Car Rental) won't require a deposit, nor put a charge on your credit card).
Excess: This refers to the amount you'll have to pay in the unfortunate event of an accident. It's crucial to know this number beforehand.
Mileage Restrictions: Some agreements specify how many kilometers you're allowed to drive daily. Exceed this, and there might be extra charges.
Cross-border Permissions: Want to venture beyond Namibia? Make sure your rental agreement allows for cross-border trips.
The Importance of Comprehensive Insurance
If there's one thing I'd emphasize as strongly as wearing sunscreen in the Namibian desert, it's getting comprehensive insurance for your 4x4 rental.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW): This is the basic level, covering damages from accidents. But it usually comes with a high excess.
Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW): A step above CDW, this reduces the excess you'd have to pay if damages occur.
Theft Protection: It's a good idea, especially if you're planning on camping or leaving the vehicle in remote areas.
Personal Accident Insurance: Covers medical costs in the event of an accident.
Tips on What to Look For and What to Avoid
Read the Fine Print: It's tedious, I know. But it can save you from potential headaches later on.
Inquire About Excess: Always ask about the excess upfront and see if you can afford it. If not, consider an upgrade in insurance.
Check for Third-party Liability: This covers you if you cause damage to another person's property or inflict injury.
Inspect the Vehicle Beforehand: Document any pre-existing scratches, dents, or issues. Snap some photos for good measure.
When you're trying to find a 4x4 rental in Windhoek, knowledge truly is power. Equipped with the right information, you're not just renting a vehicle; you're ensuring peace of mind throughout your Namibian adventure.
Driving Tips and Road Conditions in Namibia
Before you rev up that engine, let's discuss the actual drive. Driving in Namibia is not just about getting from Point A to B. It’s an experience, an adventure, and sometimes, a tiny challenge.
Top Tip: View your time in the car as part of the trip, not something to get done. Relax, watch the beautiful scenery and maybe listen to your favourite music or Audible book.
Navigating Gravel Roads
Gravel roads are a staple in Namibia. They might seem intimidating at first, especially if you’re not used to them, but with a few tricks up your sleeve, they can be smoothly navigated.
Maintain a Steady Speed: While it's tempting to speed up, maintaining a steady 60-80 km/h is ideal. It gives you control and minimizes wear on the vehicle.
Avoid Sudden Braking: Gravel can be slippery. Brake gradually to avoid skidding.
Use Both Hands on the Steering Wheel: Those tiny stones can make the vehicle swerve unexpectedly. Two hands on the wheel give better control.
Safety Precautions and Local Driving Customs
Watch Out for Wildlife: Especially around dawn and dusk. You'd be surprised how suddenly a springbok can jump onto the road!
Stay Hydrated: The Namibian sun is relentless. Keep water within arm's reach.
Keep a Map and GPS Handy: While most routes are well-marked, having a backup navigation tool is always wise.
Greet Fellow Travelers: A simple wave is customary when passing other vehicles, especially in remote areas. It’s a small gesture but adds to the camaraderie of the road.
Desert Terrains and Sandy Patches
Venturing into desert areas like the Namib Desert? Sand driving is a unique beast.
Reduce Tire Pressure: This increases the tire's surface area and prevents it from sinking into the sand.
Maintain Momentum: If you feel the car sinking, don’t stop! Keep a steady speed until you're out of the soft patch.
Follow Existing Tracks: They indicate a path that's been successfully navigated by others.
Above all, just remember: Respect the land, drive safely, and soak in every mesmerizing moment on the road.
Must-Visit Destinations Near Windhoek
Alright, adventurer, now that you're familiar with the ins and outs of driving in Namibia, where should you actually set your sights? Here's my personal take on the spots that had me wishing for one more day, every single time.
Etosha National Park
Why it’s special: One of Africa's most iconic wildlife reserves, Etosha is home to the Big Five and so much more. From its vast salt pan to the numerous watering holes, animal sightings here are exceptional.
Driving Tip: Plan for a full day or even two. The park is vast, and you'll want to visit as many watering holes as possible. Don’t forget, the park has gravel roads, so our earlier driving tips come into play.
Skeleton Coast
Why it’s special: Aptly named, the Skeleton Coast with its shipwrecks and foggy shores is hauntingly beautiful. It's where the desert meets the Atlantic, and the landscapes are surreal.
Driving Tip: It can get chilly, so pack some warm clothes. And while it's majorly accessible, some parts do require permits, so research ahead.
My drive through the Skeleton Coast felt like I was on another planet. The silence, broken only by the roar of the Atlantic, was a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Sossusvlei & Deadvlei
Why it’s special: Iconic red sand dunes, some of the tallest in the world, are found here. The contrast of these dunes against the white of the Deadvlei salt pan and the stark blue sky is a photographer’s dream.
Driving Tip: Get there early! You'll want to climb the dunes for sunrise. The play of light and shadow on the sands at dawn is mesmerizing. Remember the tips on driving in sandy conditions.
Windhoek Surrounds
And if you're looking for something closer, the areas around Windhoek have their own gems:
Daan Viljoen Game Reserve: A stone’s throw from the city, this park offers game viewing, hiking, and a tranquil setting.
Khomas Hochland: A beautiful highland with rolling hills and scenic vistas, perfect for a day's drive.
Whenever I reminisce about my 4x4 journeys out of Windhoek, it’s not just the destinations but the road to them, the surprises around each bend, that make the stories. Namibia is a canvas, and with your 4x4, you get to paint your own unique adventure. Safe travels!
