Essential Travel Information
Frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your Namibia self-drive adventure with confidence.
Yes, a 4x4 is strongly recommended for driving in Namibia. Around 90% of the country's roads are gravel, and while you won't engage the 4x4 function on every route, the high ground clearance and all-terrain tyres make the drive noticeably more comfortable and far better suited to these surfaces. Smaller cars frequently pick up underbody damage on gravel roads, and that damage is not covered by any car rental company in Namibia. A properly equipped 4x4 protects both your trip and your peace of mind.
Yes, all our rentals include unlimited kilometres, so you can explore Namibia freely with no distance caps or extra mileage charges.
Under Namibian law, the minimum driving age is 18, so to rent a vehicle from us you must be at least 18 years old and have held a valid driver's licence for more than one year. This applies to all drivers across our 4x4 and camping fleet.
No, we do not block any funds on your credit card. On arrival at our Windhoek office, we deduct the rental amount only if it has not been paid in advance. For your chosen Excess Option and the exclusions listed in our Terms and Conditions, we simply take a card imprint as security. When the vehicle is returned without damage, your copy of that imprint is handed back to you.

If your driver's licence is printed in English and shows a photo of you, you will not need an international driver's licence to rent and drive with us. If your licence does not meet both of these requirements, you will need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your original licence. We recommend carrying both documents with you for the full rental period.
A satellite phone is only worth renting or buying if you plan to travel into Southern Africa's most remote areas. Namibia has roughly 90% mobile coverage, including most common tourist and travel routes, so a satellite phone is not necessary for the majority of trips. For everyday connectivity, we recommend buying a local prepaid SIM card from MTC, Namibia's main mobile network.

You do not need to worry about the battery draining or the vehicle failing to start, as the fridge only draws power while you are on the move. While camping: the fridge is powered through a long, convenient cable we supply, which plugs into the power source at your campsite. This means you can rely on uninterrupted cooling throughout your adventure with no battery concerns.
