Taking a Rental 4x4 into Botswana & South Africa
Yes, you can, Advanced Car Hire supports cross-border travel from Namibia into Botswana and South Africa (and Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi). Because the vehicle is not yours, the border officials need proof that you have the owner's permission: we prepare a letter of authority and certified copies of the vehicle's registration and rental permit for a flat N$100 cross-border documentation fee. Tell us your route when you book, carry the pack we hand you, and budget for the small government fees each country charges at the border itself. This page lists exactly what you need for Botswana and for South Africa.
Every crossing
The documents you must carry
Whichever border you use, have these in the vehicle, printed, card machines and phone signal fail at remote posts, and officials ask for paper.
Your documents
- Valid passport, six months' validity recommended
- Valid driver's licence, if it is not in English or has no photo, carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well
- Your rental agreement
Vehicle documents (we prepare these)
- Letter of authority from Advanced Car Hire, naming you and your travel dates
- Certified copy of the vehicle registration
- Certified copy of the rental permit / licence
- The vehicle's correct international country identifier for its country of registration, displayed on the vehicle
Our cross-border documentation fee is a flat N$100 per rental, it covers preparing and certifying the pack above. It does not include the government fees charged at the border, which you pay there yourself.
Botswana
Crossing into Botswana
The two crossings most of our renters use are Ngoma Bridge, from the Zambezi (Caprivi) region into Kasane for Chobe National Park, and Buitepos / Mamuno on the Trans-Kalahari highway towards Ghanzi and Maun.
At the Botswana border you will
- Have your passport stamped out of Namibia and into Botswana
- Present the letter of authority and certified registration copy for the vehicle
- Receive a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) for the vehicle, issued at the border
- Pay the vehicle entry charges in Botswana pula (BWP), carry cash, as card machines often don't work
Botswana vehicle charges (pay at the border)
- Road Transport Permit, published at P50 per entry
- National Road Safety Fund levy, valid to 31 December of the year you pay it; confirm the current amount at the border
- Third-party insurance, published at P50 for a car (buses and minibuses pay more)
- Expect veterinary (foot-and-mouth) checkpoints inside Botswana; officials may inspect the vehicle for fresh meat and produce, and some items may not be carried through
In some cases Botswana officials may also ask for a police clearance certificate for a foreign vehicle. If your itinerary includes Botswana, tell us when you book and we will confirm the current requirements for your crossing before you travel.
South Africa
Crossing into South Africa
Most renters cross at Noordoewer / Vioolsdrif on the way to or from Cape Town, or at Ariamsvlei / Nakop towards Upington and Johannesburg.
At the South African border you will
- Have your passport stamped out of Namibia and into South Africa
- Present the letter of authority and certified registration copy if asked, without the owner's written permission, a rental vehicle can be turned back
- Display the vehicle's correct international country identifier for its country of registration (we confirm and supply the identifier and documents required for your approved route as part of the documentation pack)
Good to know
- Namibia and South Africa are both members of the Southern African Customs Union, so a Namibian-registered vehicle does not pay customs duty or need a temporary import permit for South Africa.
- South Africa accepts a driver's licence in English with a photo; for any other licence, carry an International Driving Permit
- Your Advanced Car Hire damage waiver applies on your authorised route; keep to the itinerary you declared when you booked, and tell us if it changes

Questions
Cross-border questions, answered
Can I take my rental car into Botswana or South Africa?
Yes. We support cross-border travel to Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi. Inform us in advance, and we will prepare all required documentation for a flat N$100 fee.
What does the border itself charge?
Botswana charges foreign vehicles a Road Transport Permit (published at P50 per entry), a National Road Safety Fund levy and third-party insurance (published at P50 for a car); pay in pula at the border and confirm the current amounts there, as they change. South Africa charges no vehicle entry fees for Namibian-registered vehicles. Government fees are separate from our N$100 documentation fee.
Do I need an international driver's licence?
Not always. If your licence is in English and includes a photo, it is accepted in Botswana and South Africa. If not, carry an International Driving Permit alongside it.
Is cross-border travel covered by the damage waiver?
Yes, as long as your route is authorised and you drive within the rental terms. One exception: Botswana's national parks and reserves are entered at your own risk, and backup support there is provided through third parties only. We recommend Premium Cover (zero excess, N$449/day) for long multi-country trips, see 4x4 car rental in Namibia for how the excess works.
How long does a border crossing take?
At quiet posts, 30 minutes is typical; at busy holiday crossings, allow one to two hours. Arrive early, be patient and polite, and double-check every passport stamp and customs form before you drive on.
Border regulations change. This guide reflects the requirements as we understand them in October 2026, we confirm the current position for your exact crossings when you book. Planning the drive itself? See our fuel & distance planner.
