The short answer: Angola is our one genuinely conditional destination. Our vehicle list has always read "Angola (upon request)", and that is the honest position: an Angola trip is arranged case by case, in writing, well before you travel, and our standard terms and conditions do not apply there. Angola rewards the effort (the Lubango highlands, the Serra da Leba pass, the Namib coast running north), but it is expedition travel, not an add-on. Start the conversation early and we will tell you plainly whether we can cover your route.
Since September 2023, Angola admits tourists from many countries visa-free for up to 30 days per trip (90 days in a calendar year), including US, UK, EU, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders, and SADC citizens including Namibians and South Africans. Travellers from other countries generally need a visa arranged in advance. You may be asked for a yellow fever vaccination certificate, so carry one if you have it. Check your own position before you plan around this page: entry rules are Angola's, and they change.
The main gate is Oshikango on the Namibian side and Santa Clara on the Angolan side, at the end of the tarred B1/C46 corridor into southern Angola, serving Ondjiva and Lubango. It is a busy commercial post: expect queues, crowds and a process measured in hours, not minutes. The quieter western option is Ruacana, near the falls of the same name, better for trips heading up the coast toward Namibe. Build a full day around either crossing and cross early.
Angola issues the vehicle a temporary import permit at the border (a small fee, typically valid for about a month; a carnet de passage, if you hold one, replaces it). Overland travellers report that Angolan officials commonly ask for certified copies of the vehicle registration and licence documents, and even photographs of the vehicle from the front, back and sides, so our documentation pack for Angola includes certified copies as standard. Third-party insurance may have to be bought locally at the border. Carry cash: the kwanza is the currency of the border, cards are unreliable there, and smaller posts have no banking facilities. An International Driving Permit alongside your licence is strongly recommended, and Angola drives on the right.
The main southern corridors (Santa Clara to Lubango, and the coast road) are tarred and improving, and Lubango and the Serra da Leba pass are realistic targets in a well-prepared 4x4. Beyond the main corridors, expect rough roads, long fuel gaps and very little English: Portuguese is the language of officials, fuel stations and workshops. Angola is not a place to improvise a route at the border. Plan the itinerary, the fuel and the overnight stops before you cross, and share that plan with us, because it is part of what we assess when you request permission.
If we approve an Angola trip, we put it in writing before you travel: permission for the vehicle to enter Angola, the documentation pack (our flat cross-border documentation fee is N$100 per rental), and the conditions that apply while the vehicle is outside our standard terms. The pre-authorisation deposit for travel outside Namibia is N$25,000. What we will not do is wave a vehicle through at collection and hope. If your route, dates or experience do not add up to a trip we can stand behind, we will say so at the enquiry stage and help you plan the Namibia, Botswana and Zambia version instead, which for most travellers is the better trip anyway.
No. Angola is upon request only. The trip is assessed and, if approved, confirmed in writing before you travel, because our standard terms and conditions do not apply in Angola.
Many nationalities, including US, UK, EU and SADC passport holders, have entered visa-free for tourist stays of up to 30 days since September 2023. Others need a visa in advance. Check your own nationality's position before planning, and carry a yellow fever certificate if you have one.
Oshikango/Santa Clara is the main crossing, at the end of the tarred corridor to Ondjiva and Lubango, and it is busy: allow hours. Ruacana, in the west, is quieter and suits trips toward the coast and Namibe.
A temporary import permit issued at the border, our letter of authority and certified vehicle documents, third-party insurance (which may need to be bought locally), and cash in kwanza for fees and fuel. An International Driving Permit is strongly recommended.
