What a Namibia self-drive trip really costs

The honest range: for two people sharing one vehicle, a self-drive Namibia trip costs about N$29,000 for a lean 8-day lodge-based trip in a Suzuki Jimny, about N$54,000 for the classic 12-day camping circuit in a Hilux, and about N$88,500 for a 16-day high-season loop that adds lodges and Botswana. The vehicle is roughly half the bill. Park fees, fuel and beds make up most of the rest, and they are the lines that reward a little planning, because each is easy to predict once you know how it is charged. Every figure below is either our published rack rate, an official fee, or a clearly labelled estimate.

The rental: real rack rates

Our published 2026/2027 rack rates, per day, including VAT and Comfort Cover (free tyre and glass waiver, N$45,000 standard excess). Premium Cover, which reduces the excess to zero, adds N$449 a day on any vehicle.

VehicleLow season, 15+ daysPeak season, 15+ days
Suzuki Jimny (standard)N$1,015N$1,700
Hilux Double Cab 2022–2023N$1,647 standard / N$1,822 campingN$2,460 / N$2,640
Hilux Double Cab 2024–2026N$1,937 standard / N$2,119 campingN$2,994 / N$3,176
Toyota Fortuner (standard)N$1,937N$2,780
Toyota Luxury Cruiser (camping)N$3,692N$4,600

Low season runs 1 November to 30 June, peak is July and August, high season is September to November. Rentals of 6 to 14 days cost a little more per day than the 15+ day rates above. Longer rentals are the single easiest way to cut the day rate. The full tables are on the rates page, and our vehicle decision guide helps you pick.

Fuel: easy to plan, once you know the distances

Namibia is big, and that is the joy of it. A standard 12-day circuit is about 2,300 km, and a long loop passes 3,500 km. Fuel prices are set monthly by the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy: from 4 November 2026, petrol 95 is N$28.58 a litre and diesel 50ppm is N$30.86 a litre at the Walvis Bay baseline, with inland towns slightly higher. Work on roughly 11 litres per 100 km for a loaded diesel Hilux on gravel, and about 8.5 litres per 100 km for the petrol Jimny, both labelled estimates based on typical touring use. That puts fuel at roughly N$7,700 for the 12-day circuit and N$13,000 for a 3,800 km loop, a smaller share of the whole trip than most people expect, and one of the easiest lines to plan: there is fuel in the towns along all the classic routes. Our fuel and distance planner maps the legs.

Park fees: per person, per day

Park fees are set by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism and rose on 1 April 2026. In the premium parks (Etosha, Namib-Naukluft including Sossusvlei, Waterberg, Fish River Canyon, Skeleton Coast and Cape Cross), an international adult pays N$280 per day, plus N$60 per day for a vehicle with up to 10 seats. SADC adults pay N$180 and Namibians N$60. Second-tier parks, including the Zambezi and Kavango parks, charge international adults N$200 a day. Fees are per day of presence, not per visit: three days in Etosha for two adults and a vehicle is N$1,860, not a one-off. Confirm the current schedule when you book, as the ministry revises it.

Beds: campsites and lodges (estimates)

These are typical 2026 ranges, labelled as estimates because every property prices differently. Private campsites generally run N$250 to N$450 per person per night; the NWR camps inside Etosha cost more and book out early in season. Mid-range lodge rooms for two typically run N$2,500 to N$4,500 a night including breakfast at many properties; town guesthouses sit around N$1,200 to N$1,800 a room. Camping ten nights instead of lodging ten nights is the biggest single saving on any itinerary, which is why the camping-equipped vehicle matters.

Food, extras and borders

Self-catering groceries for two run about N$350 to N$500 a day (estimate): Namibia's town supermarkets are good, and most campers braai. Restaurant mains in towns run roughly N$150 to N$300 (estimate). Useful extras at rack rates: bedding N$70 per person per day (N$80 in the 2027 season), a fridge is included in the camping kit, satellite phone N$160 a day. Cross-border trips add our flat N$100 documentation fee per rental, plus the destination country's own border charges: Botswana's published charges total roughly P200 per entry, and Zambia costs more. One-way rentals carry a fee quoted per route. The pre-authorisation deposit (N$15,000 in Namibia, N$25,000 cross-border) is a hold on your card, not a cost, as long as the vehicle comes back as agreed.

Worked example 1: the classic circuit, 12 days, low season

Two people, February, 2024–2026 Hilux camping-equipped: Windhoek, Sesriem and Sossusvlei (2 nights), Swakopmund (2), Damaraland (2), Etosha (3), Waterberg (1), Windhoek. About 2,300 km.

LineCost
Rental: 12 days × N$2,374 (6–14 day camping rate)N$28,488
Fuel: ±250 litres diesel × N$30.86 (estimate)±N$7,700
Park fees: 5 park days × N$620 (2 adults + vehicle)N$3,100
Campsites: 11 nights × ±N$900 for two (estimate)±N$9,900
Food and drink: 12 days × ±N$400 (estimate)±N$4,800
Total±N$54,000

Worked example 2: the big loop, 16 days, high season, with Botswana

Two people, September, 2022–2023 Hilux camping-equipped: the classic circuit plus the Caprivi and a Chobe crossing into Botswana, mixing 10 camping nights with 5 lodge nights. About 3,800 km.

LineCost
Rental: 16 days × N$2,469 (15+ day high-season camping rate)N$39,504
Cross-border documentation feeN$100
Fuel: ±420 litres diesel × N$30.86 (estimate)±N$13,000
Namibia park fees: 6 park days × N$620N$3,720
Beds: 10 camping nights × ±N$900 + 5 lodge nights × ±N$3,200 (estimates)±N$25,000
Food and drink: 16 days × ±N$450 (estimate)±N$7,200
Total±N$88,500

Botswana's border charges (roughly P200) and Chobe's own park fees, charged per day in pula, sit on top of this total.

Worked example 3: the lean week, 8 days, low season

Two people, Suzuki Jimny, sleeping in guesthouses: Windhoek, Sesriem (2 nights), Swakopmund (2), Spitzkoppe (1), Windhoek. About 1,500 km.

LineCost
Rental: 8 days × N$1,122 (6–14 day rate)N$8,976
Fuel: ±130 litres petrol × N$28.58 (estimate)±N$3,700
Park fees: 2 days at Sossusvlei × N$620N$1,240
Guesthouses: 7 nights × ±N$1,600 (estimate)±N$11,200
Food and drink: 8 days × ±N$500 (estimate)±N$4,000
Total±N$29,000

Note what the lean week proves: the Jimny rental is a third of the classic trip's rental, but beds eat the saving, because the Jimny carries no camping kit. Vehicle choice and sleeping choice are one decision, not two.

Questions, answered

What is the biggest cost on a Namibia self-drive trip?

The rental, at roughly half the total, followed by beds. A camping-equipped vehicle converts expensive lodge nights into campsite nights at a few hundred Namibia dollars per person, which is why campers usually spend less overall despite a slightly higher day rate.

How much should I budget per day, all in?

From the worked examples: about N$3,600 a day for two on the lean lodge-based week, about N$4,500 a day on the classic camping circuit, and about N$5,500 a day on a high-season loop with lodges. Solo travellers pay more per person because the vehicle and fuel are not shared.

Are park fees really charged per day?

Yes. Since 1 April 2026, premium parks charge international adults N$280 per person per day plus N$60 per vehicle per day. A three-day Etosha stay for two adults therefore costs N$1,860 in fees alone.

Is the deposit part of the trip cost?

No. The pre-authorisation (N$15,000 within Namibia, N$25,000 cross-border) is a temporary hold on your credit card, released after the rental if the vehicle returns as agreed. It affects your card limit, not your budget.
